1) Oppressors

Try to “put you in your place” (which truly is not your place at all)

Want you to know what they think is small or wrong with you

2) Co-miserators

Want the world to share their misery
Anger, sadness, disappointment, depression
Think of the adage “misery loves company”
There is a phenomena of bonding based on put downs and insults

Note on False Politeness and False Humility

Sometimes people want to you to keep yourself small in the name of modesty or humility. From a spiritual perspective, most religions teaching claim that each person is divine and are in essence no less than anyone else. In Buddhism, every person is considered to be equal to the Buddha, and in Christianity, Jesus says that anyone can do what he has done. So if God thinks you are “all that”, so who is anyone (someone else or you) to think you know better than God?
