About Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is characterized by alternating diarrhea, and/or constipation associated with abdominal cramps, gut pain, bloating and gas. This condition affects up to 35 million people in the United States, and accounts for 10% of all visits to primary care physicians. IBS symptoms cause disruption in work, leisure, social and family activities. In fact, IBS is the second most cited reason for missed work days in the U.S. Traditional vs. Multi-disciplinary Conventional medical treatments aim at reducing gut spasms, and increasing or decreasing gut motility primarily through fiber and anti-spasmodic medications. Unfortunately, these treatments are only effective for about 25% of IBS sufferers.
Medical treatment is more useful as part of a multidisciplinary approach to treating IBS symptoms. This approach includes
- Proper nutrition
- Deep relaxation
- Positive mental imagery
- Reduction of gut reactivity
No one modality alone has proven sufficiently for treating IBS. However, by combining therapies, patients can frequently return to a healthier state and a more active lifestyle.
How Hypnotherapy Can Help
The hypnotherapy program for IBS symptom alleviation is non-invasive and is designed to be used in conjunction with your physician’s treatment regime.
This IBS therapy program is a specific sequence of 6 to 9 sessions designed to retrain the muscles and nerves of the GI tract to function properly. The basic program is six sessions that focus on:
- Normalizing of bowel function
- Easing gut spasms and pain
- Calming the entire GI tract
- Releasing anxiety and tension
- Alleviating other troublesome symptoms
Conventional medical treatments alone have not been able to adequately alleviate IBS symptoms. However, hypnotherapy combined with conventional medicine produces remarkable results in long lasting symptom alleviation. Studies have shown that over 90% of patients’ symptoms improved with this hypnotherapy program. This is a treatment program designed to be used in conjunction with your physician(s) and is not intended as a replacement for conventional medical diagnosis and treatment.
